Form 2290 Rejection Errors

Sometimes your Form 2290 submission will be rejected by the IRS. If your submission gets rejected by the IRS, we will e-mail you notifying you of the reason. You may also find the reason in your Tax Submission History on our website. Most of the time, it is a simple fix. If you do get a rejection error, please use the following guide to find the solution.

Database Validation Error:

  • This is one of the most common rejection errors. The reason is one of two possibilities, or in some cases, both:
    1. Your EIN number is too new. It has to be at least 2 weeks old before the IRS system recognizes your EIN for online e-Filing.
      • Solution: You must wait 2 weeks before re-filing. We will not charge you again for the re-file. You can also print out the submitted return (which is the form 2290 we’ve filled out for you) and take it to your local IRS office and they will issue you a stamped Schedule 1. The submitted return is accessible to you after payment of our services. You may access it on your Tax Submission History page.
    2. Your EIN number does not match up to the Legal Business Name provided according to IRS database.
      • Solution: You can try different names and see which one works but the best way is to call IRS EIN Hotline directly at (800) 829-4933.
  • As a side note, the IRS used to accept SSN’s for the Form 2290 but now require an EIN. If you happen to have used your SSN when filing the form, please make sure you change it to your EIN. If you do not have an EIN number, please consult the IRS Apply for EIN Online page.

XML Error:

  • If you get this error it is most likely due to the way your Legal Business Name was entered. Make sure there are not any commas, periods, or apostrophes. Symbols throw off the IRS system and it can cause your application to be rejected.
    • Solution: Take out the symbols in your Legal Business Name and re-submit.

IRS Payment Not Present:

  • If you get this error, it means that we do not have an IRS payment method on file for you.
    • Solution: Edit your form and click Save & Next until you come to the IRS Payment Info section and provide information accordingly, then click Save & Next until the final screen, which will indicate to you that we have re-submitted your application to the IRS.
  • If the issue still persists, please do not hesitate to Contact Us.

No Vehicle Present:

  • If you get this error, it means that we do not have Vehicle Information on file for you.
    • Solution: Edit your form and click Save & Next until you come to the Vehicle Information section and provide information accordingly, then click Save & Next until the final screen, which will indicate to you that we have re-submitted your application to the IRS.
